Yeahhh: It’s Pentecost – some things to do

Simply enjoy Zurich: stroll through Kreis 3 and 4, visit the fleamarket at Kanzlei, drink a coffee in the sun at Idaplatz. Join the store-opening of In Love Again or do some shopping at the Viaduktbögen or Frau Gerolds Garten at Kreis 5.

Why don’t you get tickets for Zirkus Knie and enjoy their fulminant show. Or join one of the Pentecoast-concerts at St.Peter und Paul or at Tonhalle. What about a stroll through Mercantino Rimini on Monday evening?

If you are into Africa and worldmusic, travel to Winterthur, where the Afro-Pfingsten festival has to offer a lot: great concerts, markets in the city center, delicious African food, interesting workshops, a Brunch on Sunday morning and much more.

If you rather want wo enjoy the nature, do a day or weekend trip: Schweiz Tourismus recommends trips across Switzerland.

I love shoes! Where do I find the best ones in Zurich?

Besides all the “normal” shoe stores in the city centre, Zurich offers a rather small but nice choice on stylish shoes:

Peter&Vreni at Langstrasse doesn’t seem to be a great shop at first glance, but it definitely is: there is something for every taste and the staff is happy to help finding the right style, size or colour.

A bit down the street is Movida Shoe Lounge, their manly spanish collection ranges from casual to elegant.

At Dings and Monsieur Dubois you’ll find the shoe with the little something you’ve always looked for.

Glam and Maison Julie offer the most extravagant high heels, peeptoes or sandals.

If you are looking for Scandinavian shoe brands, Nord will make you more than happy: Shoe Biz Copenhagen or Vagabond can be purchased.

And guys, Zurich offers shoes for stylish men as well… Try your luck at Street Files or ON Y VA. One of our favourite brands at ON Y VA is Velt.

Again bad weather! What do you suggest me to do?

How about a bar-tour tonight, followed by a brunch in one of the many cafés tomorrow morning?

Our BAR suggestions:
- Have a beer at the recently reopened Ole Ole Bar.
- Enjoy a cocktail at Dante or Grande or at the splendid Raygrodski.
- Drink & dance at the Longstreet Bar.
- Join the party people for a Cuba Libre at Bar3000.

BRUNCH-Places:
- Maybe the best food is served at Kafi Dihei.
- If you want to bring along children, go to Kafi Für Dich.
- The oriental food lovers will be happy at Maison Blunt.
- Very relaxed is the atmosphere at Piazza, Dini Mueter or KAFISCHNAPPS.

Well, all there is to say: don’t drink too much tonight so that you can still enjoy breakfast tomorrow!

Travel Interview with Nienke of The Traveltester

Luxury resort or adventure camp?
I’d definitely go for an adventure holiday, as I think you get to see and understand a country and its people much more when you throw yourself into it and go exploring. But If I got offered a luxury holiday, I wouldn’t say no!

White beaches or white mountains?
I love a good beach walk and collecting sand and shells, but I’m not really a sunbather-type. So I pick the mountains. Hiking in Nepal was one of my most memorable travel experiences. I like to get active on a trip.

Backpack or suitcase?
Still a backpack, even though I always curse it (usually at the end of a trip after collecting too many souvenirs). I always seem to break suitcase wheels for that same reason, so I stick with carrying my own luggage and deal with the consequences of buying everything I like on the road, haha.

Flip-Flops, hiking boots or pumps?
I will probably never get used to heels, even after having lived in Sydney where everyone seems to always wear them. Flip-flops always travel with me, they’re so practical! But hiking boots usually taken me to the most interesting places, so I’d have to pick them.

Fondest travel memory?
My first solo trip was to Japan. It was an unforgettable experience. I had total freedom and all my senses opened up to new sounds, smells, people, language, religion, culture and lots of amazing food. I would recommend everyone to take the step to go on a solo trip. There is nothing quite like it.

These items are always in my luggage:
A pair of leggings (quick cover up, good for layering and makes beach dresses wearable at night), a hand scale (as I mentioned, I always over pack) and my camera (obvious, to record all travel memories and make everyone at home jealous).

Amsterdam born Nienke ['neen-kuh'] Krook ['krow-k'] camped all over Europe with her family as a child. Her early adopted passion for travel continued into a couple solo backpacking trips to Asia and Oceania and even life as an expat in Sydney. On her blog, Nienke focuses on the many ways of capturing the experiences we have when exploring the world, so that we never have to stop travelling, even when we’re at home.
